Turning 21 is a big deal in America, since it means you can legally get sozzled. So, with blink-182 finally coming of age, we sat Mark Hoppus down to talk through 21 years of highs and lows, and to ask him, «what’s next?»

This August, blink-182 turned 21 years old. for bassist Mark Hoppus, the landmark meant he’d officially been in the pop-punk group for more than half his life. So, does it make him feel old? «Nah, being 21’s great,» grinned Mark, talking to Kerrang from his farm in the English countryside.

«I don’t think i’ll feel old until [the band hits] 23, because of the lyrics in What’s My Age Again? ‘Nobody likes you when you’re 23…’ «So, how does a band celebrate turning the big two-one when one member lives in the UK and the others (vocalist Tom DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker) live across the Atlantic? «We spoke on the telephone and started planning the recording of our next album…» Mark says, Oh, we do love birthdays!

Before we talk new music, What’s been your highlight from the last 21 years?

«Mostly live shows! When i think back to the highlights in the band’s carrer, I think of the first time that we sold out Soma in San Diego, I think it fit 1,500 people, and when we sold that out it was gigantik – we never thought we’d get that big. We also played Madison Square Garden and sold that out, and then there was headlining Reading and Leeds. When we played the Hollywood Bowl, there were pictures of huge artist, and I was just like, ‘We have no business sharing the same stage as these people!»

And what about the lowest points?

«Probably the break-up of the band. But the fallout’s become a growing thing. As bad as it felt at the time, it doesn’t feel that way anymore in retrospect. It was more acrimonious and bitter than it needed to be, but I think it needed to happen for everyone involved.»

So, onto the new album… is recording easier or harder these days?

«It’s completely different to how it was before. When we started, everything was recorded to tape, so you had to have the songs 90 percent written before you walked into the studio. Now that we own our own studio, the recording [process] gets a lot more time and offers a lot more opportunity to be creative. We have to give ourselves a deadline or we’ll just piss around in the studio for years. We’re hoping to head into the studio next year [and to have the] album out in late spring/early summer. We haven’t thought about any new songs yet.»

You’re touring the U.S soon – will you start writing songs then?

«Yeah. It always happens when the three of us are together in a room. Because when [we’re not tourint], Tom lives in San Diego, Travis lives in Los Angeles and I live in London, so we don’t really talk all that much. But then when we get in a room together, it all falls into place, and we start making jokes. That’s when we start writing songs and reconnecting with everything. We’ll probably show ideas to one another when we’re getting into rehearsals for the tour, and then probably in soundchecks and dressing rooms and things like that.»

Is touring as fun as it used to be?

«Yeah, it is. It’s different now than it was before. Back in the day we would tour in a van, and sleep on people’s floors or in the van, and make $50 for a show. But it was all so fun that none of us even cared that we were sleeping on the side of the road. Now we get to tour comfortably, play big shows and have a great time. So it’s different, but it’s just as great.»

What do you have going on personally?

«We launched the Hi My Name Is Mark [clothing] line last month, so i’m working on that, and collaborating with different artists. My engineer [and co-producer of Neighborhoods], Chris Holmes, and I also started trading songs a few months ago. I just had some ideas floating round and blink wasn’t really doing anything at that point, so we decided we would get together and do something fun. We probably have seven or eight songs in various stages of completion. I haven’t chose a name [for the project] yet, we still have to figure that out. It’s like guitar mixed with electronics… at this point. It will be me and him singing. Probably at the end of this year/early next year we’ll have some music out.»

And how do you keep in touch with Travis And *Tom*? What are they up to?

«Travis and I mostly talk through text, and Tom and I talk through email. Travis just got off tour with the Transplants. I don’t know what it’s for exactly, but I know he’s been in the studio working on stuff since he got back. Like he always is. Travis doesn’t relax very well – he needs to keep himself busy. The last I heard from Tom was the he was going hunting for Bigfoot. Him and a bunch of friends rented a caravan and then drove up to northern California to where Bigfoot was sighted a long time ago. I don’t think he’s working on AVA right now. I think he’s been concentrating on sighting Bigfoot and writing movies.»

Before you go, Are there any plans to fit a UK Tour into that busy schedule of yours?

«I can’t really say anything about it yet, but we’re excited to come back… next year.»

Entonces, en el nuevo álbum… ¿La grabación es más fácil o difícil estos días?

«Es completamente diferente de como era antes. Cuando empezamos, todo era grabado en cinta, así que tenias que tener el 90% de la canción escrita antes de entrar en el estudio. Ahora que tenemos nuestro propio estudio, el proceso de grabación toma mas tiempo y ofrece mas oportunidades de ser creativo. Nos tenemos que dar una fecha limite o estaremos molestando en el estudio por años.  Esperamos entrar al estudio el próximo año y tener el álbum listo a finales de primavera / principios de verano. No hemos pensado en las nuevas canciones todavía.

Vas a empezar el tour en U.S pronto – ¿Vas a empezar a escribir canciones ahí?

«Yeah. Siempre pasa cuando estamos los tres juntos en una habitación. Porque cuando no estamos en tour, Tom vive en San Diego, Travis vive en Los Angeles y yo vivo en Londres, entonces no hablamos mucho. Pero cuando entramos a una habitación, todo cae en su lugar, y empezamos a hacer bromas. Ahí es cuando empezamos a escribir canciones y nos reconectamos con todo. Probablemente nos mostramos ideas cuando practicamos para el tour, y después probablemente en las pruebas de sonido y en los vestuarios y cosas así.»

¿Estar en tour es tan divertido como solía ser?

«Yeah, si lo es. Es diferente ahora que antes. Antes hacíamos el tour en una camioneta, y dormíamos en el piso de las personas o en la camioneta y hacíamos 50 dolares por show. Pero todo era divertido que a nadie le importaba dormir en la orilla de la carretera. Ahora podemos hacer el tour cómodamente, tocamos en shows grandes y pasamos un buen rato. Así que es diferente, pero es igual de entretenido.»

¿Que te esta pasando personalmente?

«Lanzamos la linea de ropa Hi My Name Is Mark el mes pasado, entonces estoy trabajando en eso, y colaborando con diferentes artistas. Mi ingeniero y co productor de Neighborhoods, Chris Holmes, y yo hemos empezado a intercambiar algunas canciones hace unos meses. Tenia unas ideas flotando y blink no estaba realmente haciendo nada en ese momento, entonces decidimos que podíamos juntarnos y hacer algo entretenido. Probablemente tenemos unas siete u ocho canciones en diversas fases de ejecución. Todavía no he elegido el nombre para el proyecto, todavía tenemos que resolver eso. Es como una mezcla de guitarras con electrónica… a este punto. Seré yo y el cantando. Probablemente a fines de año o a principios del próximo año tendremos música lista.

¿Como te mantienes en contacto con Travis y *Tom*? ¿Qué están tramando?

«Travis y yo hablamos por texto, y Tom y yo hablamos por email. Travis termino su tour con the Transplants. No se para que es realmente, pero se que ha estado trabajando en el estudio en algunas cosas desde que volvió. Como siempre esta. Travis no se relaja muy bien – necesita mantenerse ocupado. Lo ultimo que escuche de Tom fue que iba a la caza de Pie Grande. El y un grupo de amigos rentaron una caravana y luego se dirigieron hacia arriba del norte de California donde fue visto Pie Grande hace mucho tiempo. No creo que este trabajando en AVA en este momento. Pienso que esta mas concentrado en ver a Pie Grande y escribiendo películas.»

Antes que te vayas, ¿Hay planes para hacer calzar un Tour en UK en su agenda tan ocupada?

«Realmente no puedo decir nada todavía, pero estamos emocionados de volver… el próximo año.»
